In some ways as much a mess as the thing it is spoofing. Absolute highlight is Tom Cruise. For the rest of it, think Zoolander 2.
The plot is pretty irrelevant since it's a bunch of actors having a bit of a laugh and spoofing themselves. They play a bunch of actors making a mix of Apocalypse Now, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, etc etc. They are all spoiled brats and the movie is an over-budget mess. The writer tells the director to drop them in the jungle for real and video it "reality tv" style, to make a much better movie.
The director is killed by a landmine as soon as they land and the guys think this is all part of the movie making process. Several of them are captured by heroin smugglers and the others rescue them.
And that's pretty much it. Oh yeah, Robert Downey Jr goes blackface. Funny for 10 seconds and then just repetitive.
Plenty of laughs but not enough. I adored the bit that has all the PC idiots in the US horrified: "You never go full retard" is Robert Downey Jr's advice to Ben Stiller after his "Simple Jack" movie bombs at the box-office and Oscars. Seriously, if you find that offensive, you need to get a life, read a newspaper and find some real world problems to get your knickers in a twist about.
Back to Tom Cruise. Damn, it must be awesome to be him. He got a throwaway role in the movie and turned it into the most memorable aspect of the whole thing. Laugh out loud funny as he goes totally OTT.
You won't regret going to watch this but you'll wish it was better.
