I wanted Nell and her team to win. Despite her grumpiness, the affection was clear. Great TV if weak football
This episode didn't have the energy or excitement of the first one for some reason. John Kenny shouted and roared to great effect but the lads seemed to think it was all a bit of a laugh.
Nell appears to have got to this stage of her life without any understanding of identity. She couldn't fathom why these guys would come out on a pissy Saturday night to train. For a Northerner not to understand the importance of identity and belonging was a big disappointment for me. But the lads seem to be very fond of Nell and despite her using the softly softly approach, she was getting results.
The match finally came and to be honest I assumed Galtee Gaels had it in the bag. All that noise, all that energy. For the first while that's exactly what happened. They were 5-1 up in no time. And then they lost the plot. By half time, they were almost neck and neck. That's how the rest of the match went, tit for tat. Final whistle came and they were still even. Then I just don't know what happened in extra time. The guys from Derry found their rhythm and lashed in two goals. They figured one guy did 2-8 single-handedly! The much deserved win went to the Northerners.
I shouldn't harp on about Nell but her pep-talk before the game was very touching and perceptive and seemed in total contrast to her inability to understand the motivations and behaviours of the people she was surrounded by. I gotta say I hope they get to the final but they are really up against it!
