Wake up to the 21st century. I can now wake up to my favourite playlist or access all of my music anywhere in the house. As you can tell I am a big fan of the Squeezebox Boom.
The Squeezebox familiy of products (now owned by Logitech) allow you to play your music (MP3, AAC etc), internet radio, lastfm or podcasts in your home. The Boom is the new kid in the family and includes built in speakers in a very neat black glossy package.
As such the Boom is aimed at replacing the radio alarm clock spot bedside. It has a very flexible and easy to use alarm clock set up with different alarms for differnt days etc. It will wirelessly connect to your network and the internet and comes with a dinky remote control.
The speakers pack a rich and powerful sound from such a small device. Build quality is deceptively good. The display is simple but rest of device ooses quality with for example autodimming display for night time, selective button backlighting and auto fade out when in sleep mode. It also has a useful battery back and fall back alarm in case of network or power failure.
Like all Squeezeboxes it also offers endless configuration and personalisation options to bring out the inner geek. In fact there are a whole community of developers out there building liittle applications you can download. I now have 2 squeezeboxes so I am obviously hooked.
On the negative side you really need to have a PC running all the time to make full use of a Squeezebox, which may not suit everyone. For this reason I reluctantly take 1 star away.
