Set in England at the time of King Henry VIII and his dissolution of the monasteries, this murder mystery starts with the sending of lawyer and reformist Matthew Shardlake to a Benedictine monastery where the previous commissioner had been found murdered to solve the crime and facilitate the closing of the monastery.
If you liked Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, you'll similarly like this. Great attention to detail, you feel the atmosphere, the cold, dirt and smell of the place. The politics and uncertainty of the time make the tale all the more interesting. Great read.
