This is Lidl's best Sauvignon and as always is amazing value at less than €8. That puts it nearly half the price of a decent Marlborough. Better than any of the standard Chileans.
I did one of my irregular visits to Lidl today and found that their wine is as cheap as ever. Most things are in the €6-€8 range. I've had mixed success over the years and generally find the reds to be better than the whites.
They had two Viajero Sauvignons from Chile. One "generic" from 2006 and this "single vineyard" from 2007. They still use corks which I find unusual, being so used to Nz screwtops. The wine itself is definitely at the high end of Chilean. Despite many attempts, I have never found a Chilean or South African Sauvignon which even appraoches the mid range of NZ Marlborough. This one doesn't either but is a very decent attempt. Much more tart and goosberryish than most from Chile, which is the way I like it. But lacking in depth and range of flavours and just a bit thin (like so many).
However at this price I'm not going to complain and will be heading back to stock up.
